Abstract This paper argues that Gareth Matthews’ writing on developmental psychology is both a central part of his philosophical legacy and contribution enduring interest. Although he engages with figures, such as Piaget Kohlberg, who are no longer influential they once were, critique the ‘deficit conception childhood’ retains its relevance today. While deficit model holds any capacity, aptitude, virtue, or skill child possesses deficient version same skill, possessed by adults, Matthews contends there some things adults do badly which children well, children's curiosity, wonder, imaginative insight something we should respect—indeed envy—and try to learn from. The concludes raising number questions criticisms approach contemporary followers might fruitfully seek address.
